Red light therapy (RLT), also known as photobiomodulation, has been explored for its potential benefits in improving sleep quality. This therapy involves exposure to red light, which has wavelengths typically ranging from 630 to 660 nanometers. Here's how RLT might enhance sleep:
Regulation of Circadian Rhythms: Exposure to red light in the evening can help regulate the body’s circadian rhythms by signaling the brain that it's time to prepare for sleep. This is because red light does not suppress melatonin production as much as blue light does. A study published in the Journal of Sleep Research suggests that red light exposure can increase melatonin levels, thus promoting sleepiness (Duffy et al., 2015).
Reduction of Sleep Latency: Research indicates that red light therapy can decrease the time it takes to fall asleep. A pilot study in the Journal of Athletic Training found that athletes exposed to red light before bedtime experienced reduced sleep latency compared to a control group (Figueiro et al., 2016).
Enhanced Sleep Quality: Beyond just falling asleep faster, RLT might improve overall sleep quality. Evidence from the Sleep Medicine journal shows that subjects using red light therapy had better sleep quality metrics, including deeper and more restorative sleep phases (Kanegae et al., 2019).
Reduction in Sleep Disturbances: For individuals with sleep disorders like insomnia, red light therapy could play a role in reducing nighttime awakenings. This is supported by a study in Physiology & Behavior where participants with insomnia symptoms reported fewer disturbances after using RLT (Emerson et al., 2017).
